The Koekelaars territory lies partly in the Westhoek, borders the polders and is part of the Houtland. From Koekelare it is therefor possible to discover every day another typical countryside.
It's also safe cycling with children because no large or busy road runs through the village. On the rural roads you will not have to drive each other on one row behind each other.

Käthe Kollwitz - Cycling route 14-18

Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was a German expressionist artist. Her son Peter was killed almost immediately after its arrival to the front in the Westhoek during WWI. In her works of art, Käthe expresses her rebellion against war and poverty. In addition, she brings the story as the mother of a fallen soldier, including ' The Grieving parents ', one of the most haunting war memorials.

Great Resistance

The province company westtoer and partnership Ginter present the new seasonal cycling route Great Resistance to explore the Brugse Ommeland and a part of the Westhoek. Seven marked bicycle routes tell stories about the First World War in Gistel, Oudenburg, Torhout, Ichtegem, Zedelgem, Koekelare and Kortemark. The stories show the everyday life in occupied territory.

The Poggiomountainbikeroute starts in Koekelare and brings you through Ichtegem, Gistel and Diksmuide back to Koekelare. Through the village centre and the Oosthofpark you drive to the beautiful flat land of the towns Zand, The Mokker and Bovekerke. Via old church trails and unpaved paths you will discover the starting polders. As a bonus, follows a firm ride by the Koekelarebos. The name 'Poggio' refers to the local mountain bike club and to the Koekelareberg (Koekelare 'mountain') that is called 'Poggio' in the world of cycling.
The route gives connection to the existing mountain bike trails of Diksmuide and Ichtegem.

Krekedalfietsroute

As the name indicates, this route explores the valley of the Krekebeek, which together with the handzame valley an Eastern spur of the Yser basin. The tour starts in Diksmuide and explores first a piece of broekland. Hence the direction of Koekelare where, on the border with the Houtland of Torhout, the Ruidenberg is climbed. In Kortemark is the Krekedal revisited. Names of forgotten seaports recall the important role played by the Valley in the medieval commercial trade life.
Starting Point: Diksmuide
The route gives connection to the existing mountain bike trails of Diksmuide and Ichtegem.
The route is situated between Ostend and Torhout. The cyclist is successively introduced to the flat coastal polders and gentle Houtland. Starting from the Ostend district Stene enter the race for the first Historic polders of Ostend. Then brings as recreational route decorated old railway line Oostende-Torhout, the cyclist through Gistel and Eernegem to the old castle domain Wijnendale. The way back leads past and Ichtegem and Koekelare to Moere-Blote. Finally, it goes along quiet country roads to the channel Plassendale-Newport and the Snaaskerkse Polder.
